South Ends Week on Down NoteJ

South Ends Week on Down Note
J. C. Tilton

South strengthened their hand in the race for the CCC with some wins against league rivals this week. A strong TCN team was beaten 5-1 behind the pitching of Wes Rehmert. Next up was Bethel who was dispatched by Kyle Rehmert 3-1. To complete the trifecta, Branham tossed in the game against Bradford and beat them easily 14-2.

On Thursday, TVS had a rematch against TCN. This time it was the opening round of the Preble County tournament. Griggs started on the mound for TVS, while Holp did the same for North. The North bats spoke early and often. The South pitching was tagged for 3 homeruns by Gray, Tucker, and Shores. Eli Montgomery came in as a reliever for South. The South team had a few opportunities to rally but couldn't make much of a dent in the North lead. Josh Jones tried to spark a late rally, poking a base hit into an outfield gap, then on a sacrifice fly dashing home to slide in safely under the tag to score South's last run. North would go on to win in the next inning 8-5.

South coach Frank Wright was disappointed with the loss. “We had our chances to score.” Coach Wright also pointed out that the staff was depleted after playing in the battery of games earlier in the week. South is still in the hunt for the CCC crown and they are facing a tough sectional and district. Pairings were not available by the deadline, but South is in the same district as West Liberty Salem, Miami East, Brookville, Versailles, TCN, and Anna. All teams that are playing good baseball this spring. Comments:
