Greyhounds Finish Strong.
J. C. Tilton

Dixie ran into a physical Brookville team last Friday night. Early on it was obvious that the Blue Devils wanted to establish a strong presence in the lane. Every time Dixie tried to penetrate the tall and strong Brookville defense was there to blanket the ball. On offense Brookville was determined to score in the paint. It was a low scoring game in the first quarter as the teams sized up one another. Dixie did make one adjustment as they switched from a man to man defense to a zone in an effort to keep Brookville out of the paint. The first stanza ended in an 8-8 tie.

The 2nd quarter continued the defensive struggle. Both teams had problems hitting their shots. Late in the 2nd the score was only 12-11 in favor of the Blue Devils. But Brookville went on a little run in the final two minutes to go into the locker room up 16-11 in a low scoring affair. The Dixie offense was really sputtering, managing only 3 points in the quarter. In the third quarter Dixie sprang some ¾ and later in the game full court pressure against Brookville. But Brookville's inside dominance was taking it's toll. Dixie's post man Ben Spahr would only score 4 points in this game while Brookville post players Gambill and McDaniel would combine for 35. The Blue Devil team scored often to propel themselves into a 31-15 lead as Dixie could only manage 4 points in the 3rd.

Late in the 4th quarter the Dixie offense suddenly came alive. The team didn't play with intensity until their backs were against the wall. They chipped away at the Brookville lead and closed to within 10 with about a minute and a half left in the game. Eldred would score 12 of his 17 points in this quarter. But in a familiar scenario Dixie had to resort to fouling in the final minute in order to get the ball and Brookville hit their foul shots. This was the only quarter where Dixie outscored Brookville. But their 4th quarter rally would fall short as Brookville won 52-40.

At half time of the game Brookville had a ceremony where they inducted members into their athletic hall of fame. Honoree's were: Scott Caudill 1976-80 basketball/baseball; Steve Freeders 1957-61 football/baseball/track; Chad Lindsey football/basketball/baseball; Dee Snedeker volleyball, basketball, softball; Ron Ullery 1969-73 football/basketball/baseball.

Scoring for Brookville: Sute 7, Kilgore 2, Dill 4, McDaniel 20, Baker 4, Gambill 15. Dixie scoring: Poynter 2, Eldred 17, Adams 6, McBain 6, Barnes 2, Spahr 4, Moore 3.
Upcoming games for Dixie: Jan. 4 at Carlisle, Jan. 7 home vs. Carlisle.
