Quickness is Key for Dixie
J. C. Tilton

Coach Meinking is getting the Dixie Girls basketball ready for the winter campaign. But this summer there were a few obstacles. Dixie is in the process of building a new school. The high school gym was closed, so the team had to do workouts in the small junior high gym. There was no weightlifting over the summer, although there is limited access to equipment this fall. The team did participate in a summer league and made good use of their summer to get ready for this season. There was no early fall open gyms, but two players did participate in a fall league.

The team will be anchored by 5 returning varsity letter winners. Ashley Stamper Sr. guard, Jessie Dunn Jr. guard, Terri Barnes Sr. guard/forward, Randi Salyer Jr. guard, and Amanda York Jr. post player. The team has a strong group of experienced guards. Coach Meinking is looking for the team to utilize it's quickness by playing a full court game. She has smart players who will exploit the other teams weaknesses. The defense will be up tempo - applying pressure to the other team both half court and full court. The team graduated two good post players, so she is looking for this years post players to step it up and fill their shoes. She notes that Amanda York has improved this summer and that she was hard to stop in the paint during summer league.

When asked about an early assessment of her team, Coach Meinking replied, “This group plays hard, they show good attitudes so far and these girls should be tough.” The goals for this season remain the same as they always have been: “To contend for the league title and advance in the state basketball tournament“. Keys for Dixie this season - The team will definitely have good guard play and team quickness to put pressure on other teams. Look for a lot of points from other teams turnovers. Although they don't have huge post players, they have enough height to make their presence known. Still when playing teams which also have good quickness, the post players will need to step it up and consistently score points in the paint. The team cannot always depend on outside shooting and points off of turnovers. The competition in the SWBL is tough and so balance on offense will keep other teams on their heels.
