South slips against Trails
J. C. Tilton

Game time it was cold and rainy, conditions that lead to lot of turnovers by both teams. However, on the opening kickoff, Jason Scheiding had no problems handling the ball as he slid thru the South defense and returned the ball all the way for a quick score. Trails converted the extra point to go up 7-0.

On their opening possessions, South tried to establish a passing game. But this was ineffective, at one point they were 0-7 with one pass being intercepted. Both teams had fumblitis, during one stretch TVS intercepted a Trail pass, on the first play fumbled the ball back to Trails, only to have Trails fumble the ball back again later in their series. The South running game was sporadic, but Unger and Betzner were able to generate some yardage. In the first half the South offense was able to threaten to score two times. But both times they could not get to the goal line. The last drive came just before halftime, reaching the Trails 25, but 3 passes were incomplete, the last one being intercepted by Trails. Quarterback Kyle Rhemert injured his leg at this point and was done for the night.

In the second half, Anthony Armstrong took the reins at Quarterback for South. On the opening drive, South ran the option well. Armstrong and Unger ran for first downs. But even though the rain had stopped, the conditions were still slippery. Sure enough, a South fumble brought an early end to this drive. Trails recovered and gave the ball back with a fumble of their own. Armstrong moved the ball into Trail territory, but an interception stopped this drive as well. Trails couldn't do much and had to punt. But on the punt a roughing the kicker call gave Trail a fresh set of downs. Trails went to a 3 man I formation and pounded the ball thru the South defense. Blazer QB Randy Kerns took the ball in on a 1 yard quarterback sneak. Trails converted to go up 14-0.

But Trails was not done scoring. In the 4th quarter, it appeared that they were going to just run the ball and let the clock run out. But they sent receiver Travis Guthrie out on a streak and he caught a pass in stride to put the Blazers up 21-0. South fumbled the ball away on their next possession and during the Blazer series Bryce Conway scored the final points of the night with a 33 yard TD run. The Blazers went home winners 28-0. On defense Ray Buchanan, Ryan Phelps, and Jared Precht led the team in tackles.
