South frustrated at Covington.

The Panthers had a rough go of it against a tough Covington team. South kicked off to Covington who started on their own 23 yard line and on the second play a long pass was caught by Covington's Ross Mohler who took it in for a TD. South tried to answer by coming out passing, but the first play was an interception by Mohler who was tackled on the Bucc's 30 yard line. They promptly moved the ball down the field for a TD. The extra point kick was missed. The holder bobbled the snap, then attempted a pass into the endzone which fell incomplete. With 9:34 left in the first quarter Covington was up 13-0.

TVS had only had the ball for one play on offense to this point and were determined to try and move the ball. A Rehmert pass was caught by Hickey on the TVS 38 yard line. But the running game was getting stuffed. So a pass was attempted on 2nd down resulting in a sack, then another pass on 3rd down resulting in Rehmert being sacked. This time he was injured and had to leave the game. TVS had to punt and the Buccs took over at their own 20. Their offense began to hit high gear and their backs were churning out the yardage. But Covington shifted gears at midfield. They switched to a single back set and spread the field. They had problems moving the ball, but on 4th and 1 they hit a 55 td pass to Mohler. The extra point was good and South was looking at a 20 point deficit.

Anthony Armstrong took over at quarterback for an injured Kyle Rehmert. A pass interference move the ball forward. But soon TVS was facing a 3rd and 3 at midfield. Armstrong dropped back to pass and was sacked. South was forced to punt, but the snap was mishandled and Covington was able to get the ball on the TVS 33. The Buccs moved the ball and it looked like they would score again, but a sack forced them back and they were facing 4th and 14. They tried a 45 yard field goal that fell short and the first quarter ended.

TVS started on their own 20 and on the second play threw an interception that was caught by Nick Christian. However, 2 penalties pushed the Buccs back to their own 18 yard line. On offense they went to their spread offense, but it was ineffective as the Buccs had to give up the ball on downs. The South pass defense did a good job of shutting down Covington on their possession. But on offense South promptly fumbled the ball away. But a holding penalty put the Buccs in a 4th and 20 situation. Covington was still trying to run and shoot when Justin Flynn picked off a Covington pass. South had gained some modest yardage attacking the middle of their defense. So they went back at it and Caleb Betzner busted a run for over 60 yards to inside the Buccs 10 yard line, but he was caught from behind and the ball was punched out. And a great play went for naught as the Buccs recovered on their own 6 yard line. The Buccs abandoned the run and shoot in favor of some smash mouth football as they ran off tackle and did sweeps. Matt McCord, a 6' 3” 193 pound senior did most of the carries on this drive and on 3rd and goal from the 3 carried the ball into the end zone to put the Buccs up 26-0. The 2 point attempt failed. In the second half things didn't get any better for the Panthers as they lost 49-0.
